Why this quality rating

The Dominican Republic's public school system is underfunded and highly variable in quality. Most expat and international families in Santo Domingo and Santiago use private or international schools.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Enrollment is technically open to resident families, but language (Spanish) and quality gaps typically make private schools the practical choice for expat families.

Homeschooling

Not specifically regulated

The Dominican Republic requires compulsory education but does not have a specific homeschooling framework. Some expat and tourist-community families in Punta Cana and Santo Domingo homeschool without interference. No formal registration process.

About San Pedro de Macorís

San Pedro de Macorís is a city on the southern Caribbean coast of the Dominican Republic, sitting at the mouth of the Higuamo River roughly 75 kilometers east of Santo Domingo. The city is internationally known as the disproportionate source of Major League Baseball talent, with dozens of professional players from this single midsized city, and baseball academies operated by several MLB organizations remain a significant presence. The local economy historically depended on sugar production from the surrounding Romana and Macorís sugar regions, supplemented by the Universidad Central del Este, port activity, and free trade zone manufacturing. Spanish is universal. The climate is tropical with consistent warm temperatures year-round and a hurricane season from June through November. The autopista Las Américas connects San Pedro to Santo Domingo and onward to the Punta Cana resort region in under two hours.
