Why this quality rating

The Dominican Republic's public school system is underfunded and highly variable in quality. Most expat and international families in Santo Domingo and Santiago use private or international schools.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Enrollment is technically open to resident families, but language (Spanish) and quality gaps typically make private schools the practical choice for expat families.

Homeschooling

Not specifically regulated

The Dominican Republic requires compulsory education but does not have a specific homeschooling framework. Some expat and tourist-community families in Punta Cana and Santo Domingo homeschool without interference. No formal registration process.

About San Francisco de Macorís

San Francisco de Macoris is the capital of Duarte province in the northeastern Cibao Valley of the Dominican Republic, set on fertile rolling lowlands about 130 km north of Santo Domingo. Population sits near 125,000. The economy is built on cocoa (the city is one of the Dominican Republic's main cocoa-export hubs), rice, dairy, and remittance flows from a large diaspora in the United States, particularly the New York metro. Climate is tropical with year-round warmth, a defined May-November rainier period, and limited direct hurricane exposure compared to the south coast. Spanish is universal, with English widely understood among returnees. The Duarte Highway (DR-1) connects to Santiago in about an hour and Santo Domingo in two.
