About Kaya

Kaya is a regional capital in the Centre-Nord region of Burkina Faso, about 100 kilometers northeast of Ouagadougou on the paved highway toward Dori. The town is a long-established center of the Mossi heartland and a hub for leather working, weaving, and Sahelian livestock trade, with weekly markets drawing from a wide rural catchment. Climate is hot semi-arid Sahelian, with a single short rainy season from June to September and intense dry-season heat. Moore and French are the working languages. Since the mid-2010s Kaya has absorbed a significant population of internally displaced people from the deteriorating security situation in the northern and eastern parts of the country, which has reshaped its housing market and social services and effectively rules it out as a non-essential relocation destination.
