Why this quality rating
Belgium has a solid, well-structured public system but with notable variation between Dutch-speaking Flanders and French-speaking Wallonia. Flemish outcomes are generally stronger.
Why the expat-access rating looks like this
Resident children can typically enroll in the local system. Language is the main barrier — instruction is Dutch or French depending on the region, and the system is not set up as an English-medium option.
📋 Homeschooling
Legal with mandatory testingBelgium has a long tradition of "home education" (instruction à domicile / thuisonderwijs). Families must register with their community's education authority. Students must pass periodic competency tests. Both French and Flemish communities have established frameworks. Belgium has a significant homeschooling community.

About Gent
Ghent is the capital of East Flanders province in Belgium, sitting in the Flemish region at the confluence of the Lys and Scheldt rivers about 55 kilometers northwest of Brussels. The city is anchored by Ghent University, one of the largest in the Dutch-speaking world, and by a major industrial seaport that connects via canal to the North Sea at Zeebrugge, handling chemicals, steel, and biofuels through the merged North Sea Port. Volvo Cars operates one of its largest assembly plants in Ghent. Dutch is the official language with strong English proficiency reflecting Flemish education and the international student base. The temperate maritime climate brings mild damp winters and cool summers. Direct rail to Brussels runs about 30 minutes, to Antwerp 50, and to Lille in France an hour.
