About Klagenfurt am Wörthersee

Klagenfurt am Wörthersee is the capital of Carinthia state in southern Austria, on the eastern shore of Lake Wörthersee and about 30 kilometres from the Slovenian and Italian borders. It is the sixth-largest city in Austria and the cultural and administrative centre of Carinthia, with the local economy built on the University of Klagenfurt, electronics through Infineon Technologies Austria which operates a major site for power semiconductors, public administration, and tourism around the lake. The trilingual border setting means German is the official language but Slovene is a recognised regional language and Italian is widely understood. Direct trains reach Vienna in about four hours, with the Koralm Tunnel opening in 2025 cutting that to under three. Climate is moderate alpine with cold winters, warm summers, and significant winter fog in the basin.
