Why this quality rating

Peru's public schools can work for local families, but quality varies and most expat households still prefer private or bilingual options.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident families can generally access public schools, but Spanish-medium instruction and uneven quality make the public route situational.

❓ Homeschooling

Not specifically regulated

Peru requires basic education but does not have specific homeschooling regulations. Some families use distance education or equivalency programs. Enforcement is limited. Growing expat homeschool community in Lima and Cusco.

Healthcare

System strength, outcome signals, facility coverage, and self-pay visibility in Peru.

Method: country metrics come from public system indicators, facility coverage reflects mapped providers we can inventory, direct pricing only reflects observed self-pay pages, and relative care cost can fall back to broad cost-of-living healthcare indices. Sparse pricing does not imply sparse healthcare availability.

About Callao

Callao is a constitutional province on the central Pacific coast of Peru, a 1.3-million-resident port city that adjoins Lima to the west and houses both the country's principal seaport and Jorge Chavez International Airport, the main air gateway to Peru. The economy is heavily anchored by port logistics, fishing and fish processing (Peru is among the world's largest anchovy producers), naval facilities, and warehousing tied to Lima's broader metropolitan demand. Relocators considering Callao would in practice be relocating to greater Lima; the central districts of Callao itself have a tougher security reputation, and most expats settle in Miraflores or San Isidro nearby. The climate is mild desert with cool, humid winters and warm summers, and Spanish dominates daily life.

Cool, gray coastal climate with minimal sun (May-September)Decent internet in central districts but inconsistent in outer areasSmall but growing expat community, less established than LimaMixed walkability - port areas pedestrian-friendly but some neighborhoods unsafe at nightExcellent fresh seafood and local fish markets, authentic Peruvian cuisineLimited but emerging nightlife compared to Lima, casual local barsFew dedicated coworking spaces - mostly work from cafes or accommodationSafety concerns in certain districts - stick to established neighborhoods like San Martin or Cantolao
