About Maseru
Maseru is the capital of Lesotho, sitting on the Caledon River along the South African border at roughly 1,600 meters elevation. It is the country's only sizable urban center and concentrates most of Lesotho's government, banking, and formal employment, with the local economy heavily dependent on textile-and-garment factories supplying the US AGOA market, plus remittances from Basotho workers in South African mines. The climate is highland subtropical with mild summers, cold winters that bring frost and occasional snow, and a noticeably drier feel than the South African Highveld. Sesotho and English are both official. Foreign residents are limited to diplomats, NGO workers, and the technical staff tied to the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. The country's full encirclement by South Africa shapes nearly all external logistics.
