About Banjul

Banjul is the capital of The Gambia, with about 37,000 residents on a small island at the mouth of the Gambia River, an unusually small capital that has been losing population to the larger urban areas of Serrekunda and the Greater Banjul Area on the mainland. The local economy combines government, port activity, services, and tourism along the nearby Atlantic coast that drives much of the broader country's foreign exchange earnings. English is the official language, with Mandinka, Wolof, and Fula widely used; English use is functional in tourism and government. The climate is tropical with a single rainy season from June to October. Banjul itself is constrained by its island geography and flooding risk. Most foreign residents base in the larger coastal urban area south of the capital.
