About Nkayi

Nkayi is a town in the Bouenza Department of southern Republic of the Congo, with about 103,000 residents. It sits on the Niari River along the Congo-Ocean Railway between Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville, roughly midway along the corridor that has historically anchored Congolese economic geography. The local economy is dominated by the SARIS Congo sugar complex, which operates one of the largest sugar plantations and refineries in central Africa and is the single largest non-petroleum private employer in the country. French is the official working language with Kituba and Lingala widely spoken locally. Climate is tropical with a wet season from October to May and a drier interior period. Foreign residency is essentially limited to specific sugar-industry technical postings or NGO work.
