Why the expat-access rating looks like this
Resident families can generally enroll, but school assignment is district-based and the long-term fit still depends on local English or French integration.
🗺️ Homeschooling
Varies by provinceLegal in all provinces/territories. Alberta and British Columbia have well-established frameworks with some funding available. Ontario requires notification only. Quebec has stricter requirements including annual progress reports.

About Sydney, NS
Sydney sits on the eastern shore of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada, at the head of Sydney Harbour on the Atlantic coast. The city was historically built on the Cape Breton coalfield and the Sydney Steel works, both of which closed in the late twentieth century, leaving the region with significant economic restructuring challenges. The contemporary economy combines healthcare anchored by the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Cape Breton University, the regional port that hosts cruise visits to the Cabot Trail, and growing call-center and back-office services. Maritime climate moderated by the Atlantic brings cool summers around 22 Celsius, cold snowy winters, and a meaningful Atlantic storm season. For Canadian relocators Sydney offers some of the lowest housing costs of any city in maritime Canada along with universal healthcare access and immediate Cape Breton wilderness. The economic tradeoffs are real and structural; out-migration to other Canadian provinces has been a long-running pattern.
