About Gitega
Gitega is the political capital of Burundi, designated in 2019 to take over from Bujumbura, with about 65,000 residents in the central highlands at roughly 1,500 meters elevation. The local economy combines government administration in transition as ministries shift from Bujumbura, the surrounding agricultural area focused on coffee and tea, and limited services. Burundi is among the world's lowest-income economies, with constrained electricity, banking, and healthcare infrastructure. Kirundi and French are official languages, with English added as an official language as Burundi has joined the East African Community; functional French is essential, and English use remains limited. The climate is mild tropical highland. Gitega is not a general relocation target; activity is limited to diplomatic, NGO, and specific public-sector work.
