About Belmopan

Belmopan is the capital of Belize, with about 13,000 residents in the Cayo District in the interior of the country, built in the 1960s and 1970s as a planned replacement capital after Hurricane Hattie devastated the coastal former capital of Belize City in 1961. The local economy is concentrated in government administration, including embassies and regional offices of organizations such as CARICOM, with limited private sector activity beyond services for the public workforce. English is the official language alongside Belizean Creole and substantial use of Spanish given proximity to Guatemala. The climate is tropical with a wet season from June to November. Belmopan sits about 80 kilometers inland from Belize City. The city suits relocators with diplomatic, government, or regional organization employment specifically.
