Population is about 130,000 across the cluster. The area includes the Ostia Antica archaeological site β the remarkably preserved ruins of Rome's ancient seaport β and Castel Fusano's pine forest, one of the largest urban green spaces in Europe. Modern residential development here is largely postwar, mixing middle-class housing with stretches of informal building, and is connected to central Rome by the Roma-Lido rail line that has been chronically troubled. Climate is hot Mediterranean with sea moderation in summer and mild rainy winters. Italian is the working language. Foreign relocation is uncommon outside the small archaeological-research community at Ostia Antica.
