About Barrie, ON
Barrie sits on the western shore of Lake Simcoe in central Ontario, about 90 kilometers north of Toronto and connected by the GO Transit commuter rail line and Highway 400. It serves as the commercial center of Simcoe County and an increasingly common landing spot for Toronto workers priced out of the Greater Toronto Area. Winters are cold and snowy thanks to lake-effect snow from Georgian Bay, and summers are warm with heavy cottage-country tourism. The economy mixes manufacturing, healthcare, and a growing remote-work population commuting to Toronto a few days a week. English is the working language, and French immersion schools are available but not dominant. Real estate has risen sharply since the pandemic but remains cheaper than central Toronto.
